#WorldCleanUpDay.....Awesome
In
the words of Neil Patrick World Clean Up Day was “LEGENDARY”. Who knew cleaning
could be so much fun. The success we accomplished on the 15th of
September 2018 (Worldcleanupday) is in appreciation to God Almighty who saw us
through, NULiFE Project Team, Simon Victoria, Agada Daniel and Emmanuel, and in partnership with IB-NATURALS: a young Entrepreneur who believes in the
sustainability of our environment. They engage in production of natural cosmetics,
lotion and hair butter.
Driving a Clean and Healthy Environment
(Environmental Sustainability)
Our
environment is the place of our abode, the foundation of our growth and development.
Nature has been designed to sustain itself and every life form on earth.
Nature/environment function in cycles and systems which allows for the flow of energy from the Lithosphere, to atmosphere, to biosphere and hydrosphere. It can
be implied therefore that whatever is the input of our actions will produce an
output.
The
health of our environment can affect our health and wellbeing, and it is the responsibility
of all Nigerians to clean up our environment and maintain its health and
sustainability.
Community
Collaborative Effort; Lets flash back to the times were general cleaning was
organized every last Saturday of the Month. then i remembered that every member of the neighborhood would come out with a broom or shovel, cutlass, rake, and each one would thoroughly cleanup the environment. What has happened to that spirit? These days individuals are only
considered about there immediate environment. Let’s try to revive that
community spirit in keeping environments health.
There
are air and water borne disease in our environment. The outbreak of such in our
neighborhood would affect every individual despite the individual effort in
keeping our immediate surrounding clean. We cant wait for the government either, to solve the problem of environmental degradation, we must come together as
Nature does to ensure a healthy environment and healthy lives.
The
process of cleaning can be made attractive and fun. Music is a medium with
ability to lift up the spirits of people and motivate them to engage.
Proper Disposal of Waste; This
is a major challenge in our Nigerian Cities today. How we dispose of our solid
waste; from our homes, to walking on the street or riding in a car of bus, is a
complete abuse of our environment, and every year we pay the price; be it an
outbreak of diseases or flooding.
Many
at times we engage the Mai Bola, Mai Shara, that guy that picks up your waste
every week, and we believe it ends there. Have we ever thought to consider were
this waste is dumped? Does he move it from your house only to dump it at the
back of the house? It lies in our responsibility to know how this people
dispose of the waste. To ask the question of where the waste is disposed of, if
not, you maybe be at the receiving end of the resultant effect of their
actions.
If
there is no government or private bin collectors in the
neighborhood/community, a central collection point can be built in the nature
of a furnace, at which within a certain period the waste is burnt. Take note to
always eliminate combustible items.
Management of Vacant Plots and Land; vacant
plots and land within our environment, are most times converted to a waste
collection point, and serves as a breeding ground for mosquitoes, rodents and
snakes.
There
are many ways such can be converted to add value to the community. One of such
ways is Community Subsistence Farming or in another terms Urban farming. The
community can come to together to manage and farm on such properties; this has
a double advantage;
(1) Control the breeding of insects, rodents
and snake and
(2) Provide
food for the people
Planting of Trees; one
of the ways in which we ensure the health of our environment is through the
planting of trees. Trees have a lot they do and contribute to nature and our
personal lives.
Trees
have the ability to do the following;
- · Reduce carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. There are what we use to battle air pollution and the emission of green house gases.
- · Due to shade they provide they reduce the effect of radioactive rays and regulate temperature.
- · Trees also provide food, in form of fruits and nuts
- · The roots of trees help to hold the formation of soil and reduce the flow of runoff water. This helps to prevent erosion and flooding.
The World
Clean Up Day was conveyed by Green Life Initiative a CSR project of NULiFE
Project and partnered with IBNaturals. The goal of Green Life Initiative is to
educate the public on environmental health and how the health of our
environment can improve our health, reduce the rate of environmental
degradation and the adverse effects of climate change. Your contributions and questions ar valuable to driving sustainable living.
